Anna Asimes' Obituary
Anna Asimes, 86, of Cleveland, Ohio, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 2, 2025 surrounded by her loving sons.
Anna was born in Velvendos, Greece, to Nicholas and Georgia Asmis on September 8, 1938. With dreams of a new life in the US, she arrived in New York in 1956.
After settling in Cleveland with her aunt and uncle, Anna worked hard as a tailor to make this new place her home and was deeply connected to the growing local Greek community. She took advantage of her opportunities and brought the rest of her family to live here in the US in the following years. She met her husband and they were married on April 20, 1958. They were married for 35 years, but had enough love to last a lifetime, as Anna always said.
Anna was known to friends and family for her incredible cooking and nurturing spirit. She was a grandmother, in the truest sense, to many, not just her own family. Anna was the go-to Yiayia for mending clothes, cooking favorite meals, and teaching Greek songs and rhymes. She was resourceful in all that she did - she could grow a tree from the smallest cutting and always had enough food to feed whoever stopped by last minute. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and warmth. Her recipes will be cherished and passed down for generations.
Anna is preceded in death by her husband Efthymios, her sister Evanthia (Tom) Gigis, and her parents.
Anna is survived by her sons Nick and Dean (Alexandra), grandchildren James (Stacy), Andie (Arry) Lazaridis, and Jordan, (and) great granddaughters Charlie Lazaridis, Anna Asimes, and Efthymia Lazaridis, and her brother Tony (Pelagia). She also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 6th at 11 AM at St Paul Greek Orthodox Church. Visitation will be held the hour preceding the funeral, 10 AM to 11 AM. Interment at St. Theodosius Cemetery. Donations can be made to the St. Paul Ladies Philoptochos Society. (https://www.stpaulgoc.org/ministries/adult-ministries/philoptochos/).
